If there is not enough space in the intake system for a straight section of pipework, a 90-degree silicone elbow solves the problem without having to assemble the pipework from several fittings. This type of connector changes the direction of the pipework at a fixed angle of 90 degrees and, when the diameter is correctly selected, helps to maintain an airtight seal and a stable air flow. In passenger cars and vans, the key factors here are dimensional compatibility with the pipe connection, heat resistance and a leak-free connection.
Read moreHow to select the correct diameter and type for your system?
A silicone elbow is selected based on the measurement of the outer diameter of the pipe or spigot. If it is too loose, it will not provide a tight seal, whilst if it is too tight, it will operate under stress and wear out more quickly. This category includes sizes 18, 25, 45, 51, 57, 60, 63 and 70 mm, so the range covers both small connections and larger inlet sections.
When making your selection, compare the following above all:
- the diameter of the connection to the pipe,
- the amount of space available for the bend in the engine compartment,
- the finish option: black, blue, red or Pro Blue,
- the price-to-diameter ratio and the finish option.
The colour does not affect the connector’s geometry. The price increases mainly with the diameter, and the Pro Blue version may cost more than the standard one.
How can you tell the difference between a genuine and a worn 90-degree silicone elbow?
You can recognise a genuine 90-degree silicone elbow by its consistent geometry, even walls and dimensions that match the description. For TurboWorks models, the following features are important: quadruple braided reinforcement (i.e. four reinforcing layers), a wall thickness of 5 mm, strength confirmed by testing up to 7 bar, and thermal resistance from -50 °C to +260 °C. This set of parameters provides a safety margin in the intake, as it limits the swelling of the connector and the loss of seal integrity under load.
Replacement is usually prompted by:
- micro-cracks at the clamps,
- bulging following a rise in pressure,
- flattening of the bend restricting air flow,
- signs of leakage or slippage from the spigot.
How should it be fitted to ensure a tight seal?
A silicone elbow is easy to fit, but only if the connection is prepared carefully. The pipe ends must be clean and smooth, as rust, burrs and residues of old rubber can cut through the material or weaken the clamp’s grip. You will achieve a tight connection when you slide the fitting in to its full depth and position the clamp a few millimetres from the edge, without overtightening.
After starting the engine, check that the elbow does not rub against other components and that, once warmed up, there are no signs of blow-by or play at the joint. If the intake has been modified previously, it is safest to buy parts based on actual measurements of the system, rather than by eye.
FAQ
How do you check if the elbow fits the pipe?
Measure the external diameter of the pipe connection and select the appropriate size (18, 25, 45, 51, 57, 60, 63, 70 mm). If it’s too loose, it will lose its seal; if it’s too tight, it will wear out more quickly. The colour does not affect the geometry.
How can you tell if an elbow needs replacing?
Micro-cracks near the clamps, bulges, flattening of the bend, signs of leakage or slipping off the pipe connection — these symptoms indicate that it needs replacing.
