A leak at a flange, cover or body is not usually caused by the absence of a gasket. More often, the problem lies in incorrect thickness, inadequate oil resistance or a sheet size that is poorly matched to the required cut-out. Gambit AF-1000 gasket sheets allow the material to be selected to suit the operating conditions.

This category offers sheet sizes of 250x250, 250x500 and 1500x1500 mm, with thicknesses ranging from 0.8 to 4.0 mm. This range is sufficient for both one-off repairs and the mass production of cut-to-size components.

What are Gambit gaskets and how do they differ from ordinary gaskets?

In practice, the term ‘sheet gasket’ refers to sheet material from which gaskets are cut to a specific shape and for specific operating conditions. A standard gasket comes in a fixed size, whilst a gasket sheet offers a choice of thickness, format and chemical resistance. This difference is significant where compression, temperature and contact with fuel or oil are critical factors.

AF-1000 sheets are based on aramid and mineral fibres, combined with an NBR rubber binder. As a result, they withstand water, steam, kerosene, petrol, fuels and oils well. In the automotive industry, this material is sometimes referred to as ‘engine Gambit’ or ‘oil Gambit’.

When making your selection, check the following first and foremost:

  • the working medium, i.e. water, steam, fuel or oil,
  • the continuous and peak temperatures,
  • the maximum operating pressure,
  • the surface condition and the width of the seal,
  • the sheet size required for the cut-out.

Selection of sheet thickness and size

The thickness is selected according to surface irregularities and the rigidity of the joint. A 0.8–1.0 mm sheet is suitable for smooth flanges and precise clamping; 1.5–2.0 mm provides greater tolerance for minor irregularities; and 3.0–4.0 mm is used where greater material flexibility is required. A sheet that is too thick does not automatically improve the seal, as it may hinder even pressure application.

The sheet size affects the amount of waste. Cutting out one or two gaskets usually justifies a size of 250x250 or 250x500 mm, whilst a full sheet of 1500x1500 mm makes sense for a larger number of cut-outs. This is clearly reflected in the prices, as a small 250x250x0.8 mm sheet costs 23.00 zł, whilst a 1500x1500x4.0 mm sheet costs 1,966.90 zł.

What specifications and standards confirm the quality of AF-1000?

Sealing sheets should specify the material designation, temperature, pressure and resistance to media. The AF-1000 complies with the DIN 28091-2 FA-AM1-ST designation, operates continuously up to 350 °C and up to 420 °C for short periods, and up to 250 °C when exposed to steam. The maximum operating pressure is 12 MPa.

These specifications are more important than the name ‘Gambit’ itself. If the gaskets are to be used in an engine, a housing or a flanged joint, selection based on the medium, temperature and thickness is more important than basing the decision solely on the price per sheet.

FAQ

1. How do I select the gasket thickness based on surface roughness and contact pressure?

Select according to surface irregularities and joint stiffness: 0.8–1.0 mm for smooth surfaces and precise contact pressure; 1.5–2.0 mm for minor irregularities; 3.0–4.0 mm when greater flexibility is required. A sheet that is too thick hinders even contact pressure.

2. Which sheet size is best for a single repair, and which for batch cutting?

For one or two gaskets, choose 250x250 or 250x500 to minimise waste; for a larger number of blanks, a full 1500x1500 sheet is the most economical option. The sheet size affects the amount of waste and the unit cost.
