If you are custom-making a gasket and want to avoid leaks caused by an incorrectly selected thickness or size, the Gambit AF 200 variants are the right starting point. The AF-200 Universal gasket sheet is suitable for use with water, steam, gas, oils, fuels, alcohols, and basic chemicals at moderate pressures and temperatures, making it ideal for many common maintenance applications.
How do you select a Gambit AF 200 gasket sheet for the medium and operating conditions?
The Gambit AF 200 gasket sheet should first be selected based on the medium—that is, the working fluid in the system—and only then based on the sheet dimensions. The material, based on KEVLAR aramid fibers—which are high-strength fibers—as well as mineral fibers and fillers, is oil-resistant and versatile, but it still must be matched to the temperature, pressure, and condition of the contact surface.
When making your selection, check the following first and foremost:
- the type of working medium, such as water, steam, gas, oil, or fuel,
- the operating range, i.e., the average pressures and temperatures during actual system operation,
- the condition of the flange—specifically, the flatness and condition of the surface against which the gasket will be pressed,
- the installation method, particularly ensuring that the bolts are tightened evenly without localized overloading.
The manufacturer GAMBIT specifies AF-200 Universal as suitable for most typical applications; however, for aggressive media or extreme operating conditions, a more specialized gasket must be selected.
Thickness and size determine the seal’s effectiveness and the amount of waste
The AF-200 Universal sheet is available in thicknesses of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 4.0 mm, and in sizes of 250 × 250, 250 × 500, 500 × 500, and 1,500 × 1,500 mm. The selection process begins with the sealing surface, as a sheet that is too thin will not compensate for unevenness, while one that is too thick may require greater pressure and be more prone to deformation.
Thin sheets (0.5–1.0 mm) are typically chosen for even surfaces and small cross-sections. The 1.5–2.0 mm range is the most common compromise between fit and stability. A thickness of 4.0 mm makes sense where greater gap-filling capacity is needed, but installation must be carefully controlled. In a workshop, it’s also worth selecting such consumables with regard to waste generation and storage requirements.
When is this versatile material the right choice?
The AF-200 gasket sheet is ideal when you need to cut a gasket yourself for servicing, repairs, or fabricating a part according to a pattern. The sheet’s uniform structure facilitates consistent cutting, and its consistent thickness helps maintain the required sealing quality in both workshop and industrial applications.
For workshops and users who cut individual gaskets
Workshops usually opt for larger sizes because unit cost is a factor when making multiple cuts, and they want to keep a stock on hand. Users who need just one gasket tend to choose smaller sheets to avoid overpaying for unused material. If you’re comparing options on the list, start with the dimensions of the finished gasket, then select the thickness based on the surface condition and the type of medium. Following this order minimizes the risk of leaks right from the first installation.
FAQ
1. What media and parameters does the AF‑200 gasket support?
The AF‑200 is suitable for water, steam, gases, oils, fuels, alcohols, and basic chemicals at moderate pressures and temperatures; for aggressive media, a specialized material should be selected.
2. How do you select the plate thickness based on surface irregularities and installation conditions?
0.5–1.0 mm works well on even surfaces and small cross-sections; 1.5–2.0 mm is the most common compromise; 4.0 mm fills larger gaps but requires controlled installation and greater clamping force.
3. Which size is more cost-effective for a workshop, and which for a single gasket?
A workshop chooses larger sizes for lower unit cost and to maintain inventory on the shelf; a one-time user more often chooses smaller sheets to minimize waste—first the gasket size, then the sheet.
